Erath winery is a pioneer winery, established in 1969. It was a humble beginning - a few barrels of pinot, and a few barrels of Riesling...after planting 23 different varietals in the ground to see which grapes would flourish."
Savor classic Oregon Pinot and enjoy the sweeping views of the picturesque Jory hills of the Dundee Hills AVA here at Erath Winery. These Jory "Red" Hills were created by a basaltic lava flow over 16 million years ago, which left behind an iron rich red soil (more about that in your reader). This soil type is called "Jory" soil. The hills enjoy the summer warmth of the Willamette Valley. Signature flavors of subdued dark fruitiness abound. Red Hills wine typically displays aromas of red fruits, strawberry, cherry and raspberry. The wines have what the French call “gout de terrior”, the taste of the land.
Now, 48 years later and producing some of the finest Pinot Noir in the Nation, Erath farms about 115 acres of grapes in the Dundee hills, all within a few miles of the winery.

In 1969, Dick Erath planted 23 different varietals to see which grapes would flourish. It was the Pinot Noir which flourished. While living with his family in an unheated logger's cabin, Dick began building the original winery and his family home.
He says,
"Hi. This is Dick Erath. I had been making wine in the Bay area for several years when I tasted some great older Burgundies. It was my life's defining moment, the beginning of my passion for Pinot Noir. The Dundee hill's climate and unique iron-rich, red soil attracted my attention. After studying historical climatic data and other agriculture in the area, I moved here in 1967 and decided to plant as much acreage as possible... In 1972, Erath Vineyards was founded and we made our first wines. It was certainly a humble beginning - a few barrels of pinot, and a few barrels of Riesling..."

Ask Dick Erath about his aha wine moment, and he’ll tell you a love story. He recalls somewhere in the time frame of 1965 to 1966, he fell for Pinot Noir, specifically a 1955 Beaulieu Vineyards made by André Tchelistcheff. He was hooked.

In 1967, Erath, while attending school at UC Davis, fortuitously met Richard Sommer from Oregon’s HillCrest Vineyard. One of his professors told him how Charles Coury and David Lett had recently moved to Oregon to start vineyards. That October, he interviewed at Tektronix in Beaverton. While in Oregon, he met with Coury — Erath says they talked until 4 in the morning. After returning to California, Erath read Coury’s master’s thesis (published in 1964), which explored growing grapes in cooler climates. Instinct and research convinced him Pinot Noir in the Willamette Valley was a perfect match.
Erath accepted the job at Tektronix and moved to Oregon. He found a site in the Chehalem Valley and started planting in 1969 with starts he had rooted in Dundee in 1968. He admits, at the time, they were all on a steep learning curve. And the group thrived on collaboration. Regarding the Willamette Valley as a major player in the world of wine, Erath says, “I never thought of failure. I also never thought it would become the giant that it is!” Although he sold the winery in 2006, he still makes a barrel of wine every year, as he’s done since 1965. |
