Utopia
Utopia is a true boutique winery, releasing small production lots of only a few hundred cases of each wine each year. In addition to Pinot Noir, Utopia also makes Chardonnay and a hearty, dry Rose.
Named after Thomas More's popular satire, Utopos in Greek means "nowhere". Throughout history, there have been many attempts to create a Utopian society. Sadly, none have succeeded, until now. Utopia Vineyard is the home of The Utopian Tasting Society, a perfect place for people who want to grow their knowledge and appreciation of wine. Ask them about it!
You can enjoy Corn-Hole, Bocce-Ball or sip a glass of wine on the patio amongst the vineyard, adjacent to the tasting room. Be sure to take a stroll among these vines during your visit.
The Utopia Vineyard is perfectly situated at an elevation of 500 feet in the heart of the Ribbon Ridge AVA in the North Willamette Valley. It consists of about 17 acres of sloping contiguous south-facing hillsides of Willakenzie soils, a sedimentary soil from the great Missoula Floods.
The vineyard is dry-farmed organically as part of the terroir. Terroir is not only climate, soil and terrain, but also tradition. Through the dry-farming tradition, the deep growing plants interact with the microbes in the soil, absorbing nutrients and minerals that contribute to the complexity and structure in the wine.
Their Pinot Noir is aged in a combination of new and used French oak barrels produced by one of the world’s finest Burgundian coopers, Francois Freres. They age their wines about 1 year in barrel. 2,400 cases were produced in 2016.
Utopia Vineyard is unlike any other winery you’ve ever visited; off the beaten path on a gravel stretch of Ribbon Ridge Road; a reminder of the way things used to be in Oregon Wine Country.
When you come into the tasting room you’ll most likely be served by Dan, their owner/winemaker, a happy exile from silicon valley, and another reminder of the way things used to be. His contrasting styles celebrate the delicious contrasts of Oregon plentitude. No one knows more about Utopia wines than Dan, so feel free to ask him anything.
