...Sometimes we imagine early Oregon Country as a sort of lost paradise; a place of boundless forest and riverscape, where farms carved from the wild had room for both wolf and lamb; and men lived in peace with nature--and each other. Things may no longer be that good; yet we've found an echo of that peaceful kingdom in 2 small pieces of Oregon Country, the Willamette Valley and Oregon Coast*...

Best of Oregon from the Willamette Valley to the Pacific Ocean, Tillamook, Cannon Beach & Astoria.
Day 1
After breakfast in McMinnville, we head to Résonance*. With Résonance Vineyard*, they realized, the Willamette Valley is to the New World what Burgundy is to the Old World. "There is a feeling", they say, "a spirit, an energy—a unique ‘somewhereness’, that tells us this place can produce expressive single-vineyard Pinot Noir wines with an identity and personality.”, says Pierre-Henry Gagey, President of Maison Louis Jadot. At Résonance, you'll have a choice of elevated tasting (Vineyard tour & seated tasting, What grows together, goes together or French Portfolio and Oregon Wines at $95)
After the tour and tasting, we'll stop nearby for lunch.
Then we’re off for a tour and tasting at Argyle*, featuring the Argyle Library of Pinots, Chardonnays and Sparkling wines. The Tasting House features an estimable library of reserve wines with their Legacy Tasting, dating back to Argyle’s very first vintage in 1987. One of the biggest wine libraries in the region, it is a testament to Argyle’s ambition to make wines that will endure.
We'll then head back to McMinnville's Old-town for relaxing, exploring, dinner and sleeping.
Day 2 - Celebrate heritage at Adelsheim Vineyards
We start with a private or semi-private tour of Adelsheim* Vineyard. “The idea that we would plant a grape variety that no one knew well, in a place that nobody had ever heard of, was not only remarkably naïve, it was a remarkable leap of faith.”, says David Adelsheim. On a beautiful June day in 1971, David & Ginny Adelsheim stood above the open field there and were taken with the beauty of its orange and purple wildflowers. Five hundred feet below... Oregon's north Willamette Valley stretched out in a patchwork of orchards, pasture and native trees... We'll have a choice of elevated tasting experiences (the Estate Tasting, Fireside Experience or Cave Experience at $95)
Soter* is our next stop. YOU’RE GOING TO LOVE IT THERE.
Their goal at Soter Vineyards is to provide elevated, authentic hospitality experiences to everyone who visits Mineral Springs Ranch. From creative and nourishing food, to thoughtfully designed spaces, each tasting is curated with the guest in mind. Their Provisions Tasting (at $125 pp) is a guided culinary experience designed to immerse you in the bounty of Mineral Springs Ranch, their Biodynamic farm and vineyard located in the heart of Oregon wine country. Seasonal cooking isn’t a fad at MSR, it’s their way of life. Their pairings change weekly and follows the ebb and flow of their farm’s seasons. The goal is to source 100% of their ingredients from our property, and when that’s not possible, (they obviously need oysters!) they bring in the highest quality items from their neighbors at the coast, or other organic farms in the region. Their culinary team utilizes their farm’s abundance in the most creative ways – expect a menu with a diverse array of textures, flavors, and preparations. Other tasting experiences are available, with lunch nearby.
We'll then head to Carlton's Old-town for more tasting, relaxing, exploring, dinner and sleeping.
*subject to availability and group size
Day 3 - From wine country to the coast.
After breakfast, we're off to the coast at about 9am, from Carlton to Roads End. The Roads End beach near Lincoln City marks the end of the Old Elk Trail. Indians used this trail along the Salmon River as an inland route for hundreds of years. The area’s first tourists, two couples on their honeymoon, followed this route in 1837. Much of it is now Highway 18.
Coastal expeditions from Fort Vancouver began is 1826.
Imagine this as we arrive at the Coast--Early visitors came by buckboard and horseback from the Willamette Valley, so excited at the prospect of the beach that they were willing to travel 2 days over a mountain pass to achieve a glimpse of the ocean and hold sand in their own hands. Many of these early settlers came from the Midwest on the Oregon trail, and had never seen the ocean. Imagine their reaction as they crested the last hill.
Campgrounds and lodging to accommodate these vacationers were some of the Coast's 1st business endeavors. The other focus was fish. Salmon swam thick as seaweed in the inlet bays along the entire coastline. In the 1800s, commercial canneries thrived for many decades, canning and shipping millions of cans a year. Fishing, logging and eventually dairy farming were the primary occupations back then." Click here for a Geologic History and Culture of the Oregon Coast
Once at the coast, at Road's End, we’ll head north to Cannon Beach, our home for 2 nights. The village is incredibly picturesque and is listed as one of ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages of Oregon’ – the most beautiful villages in Oregon. In fact, it’s so beautiful, it was chosen as the filming location for The Goonies, at Haystack Rock and Indian Beach, Point Break, at Indian Beach, and Twilight, at Indian Beach.
On our way to Cannon Beach, we'll take in 2 stops for a wonderful introduction to the Oregon Coast. First, is Cape Meares. Then Garibaldi. Tucked into a wooded curve of the coastline, Garibaldi sits against the mountains with its face to the harbor and sea... Garibaldi's history is steeped in timber and maritime tradition, and like many Oregon coast communities, geography has played an important role in shaping the city and port that exist here today. Up through the early 1900s, Tillamook, Garibaldi and the surrounding villages relied on ship and rail to support commerce. This dependence on the sea to transport goods and passengers lead to increased concern in the safety and viability of crossing the Tillamook Bay bar. The treacherous waters have claimed several ships and lives over the years, as well as a whole city. More on that later**. Once in Garibaldi, we'll visit the historic Coast Guard Boathouse out at the end of the longest pier in Oregon. If we hit the timing right (early afternoons Saturday and Sunday Memorial Day to Labor Day), we can go inside the boathouse. There’s plenty more to explore in the fishing village of Garibaldi. The Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad travels past the pier and picks up riders nearby at 306 American Ave. Garibaldi for excursions north to Rockaway Beach. The Garibaldi Museum, within walking distance at 112 Garibaldi Ave., features exhibits on the area’s maritime history. And there's 2 prime seafood markets here we can stop at for fresh seafood to bring home.
The Tillamook Cheese Factory is also a 'must-stop', with many exhibits and things to see and taste.
You’ll get the afternoon to check out Cannon Beach a bit: explore the pristine beach and marine life around Haystack Rock, or just stroll along the shops and galleries. We’ll check into your hotel, just steps away from the ocean, then take the evening and dinner (but not dessert*) for ourselves, and meet up for a beach bonfire after dark, at Haystack Rock, with champagne and *s'mores, just steps away from your oceanfront home base.
