The Pinot noir grape, known also as Vitis vinifera, is well known for having a variety of clones. It was first mentioned in 1370 under the name Noirien, but it was believed to have been cultivated earlier than that, since no other grape variety associated with Medieval Burgundy, is believed to have been able to produce red wines of a quality, able to impress the papal court.
The secret is out! The noses are aromatic, subtle and elegant, with tones of peach, apple, berries and tropical fruit, with flowery bouquets. The taste is savory and mineral. The tannins are soft flanked by beautiful acid; a perfect balance. The texture is silky smooth and velvety, which sets it apart from any other spot in the America's. And yes, these are dry wines through and through. Don't let the mention of Riesling turn you off.
Are they intensely aromatic? Are they fruit forward? Yes and yes. Are they sweet? Emphatically, NO.
The Willamette Valley is more Burgundian than American, more butter than olive oil, more pretzels than focaccia, and more mountain than plains. This area is off-the-chain gorgeous.
Once you exit the route at Sherwood, you begin a slow crawl up the mountainside through 1-horse villages, past sheep and llamas beginning to graze the first green grass of an early Spring, and onward to the very end of the very last road to the small hamlets of Forest Grove, Carlton, Amity and Gaston. Here is where you'll meet brothers Philippe and Francesco or Pierre-Henry, at 100 meters above sea level, and in one of the most peaceful places you have ever been.
The 5-10 acre farms, called Estates, are wonders. The grape varietal and steep grades forces most work to be done by hand, plant by plant, cluster by cluster. It's hard work, but the results are unique and wonderful. Over half of the vineyards are planted to Pinot noir, and the two white grapes are, Chardonnay and Pinot gris. There's many other varietals. But this Pinot noir, the best and most unique of them all...
To order your tour/EVENT, please reply here with your request and I'll confirm with you ASAP. I expect a Good Time will be had by all, during these holidays and beyond.
Cheers!
Phil
