Antica Terra
Appointments only at 1:30 and 3:30 tastings. This is a winery you probably have not heard of, and you may have difficulty finding it even as you are staring right at it! Without solicitation, several sommeliers in Portland raved about this winery and the winemaker, Maggie Harrison. This is a true oenophile experience and collectors’ choice, as you will be tasting Antica Terra wines side-by-side with European wines of excellent pedigree, from importer Neal Rosenthal. All the European wines are limited release and available for sale. The tasting takes place in a beautifully appointed part of the barrel room, dress for cool temperatures. I guarantee the experience will exceed your expectations.
In 2005, Maggie Harrison made a leap of faith, leaving the famed Sine Qua Non winery in California’s Ventura County to move her family to the Willamette Valley. It paid off. Thanks to her boldness and skill, Harrison has become known for silky, supple wines.
But it's wasn't easy. The vines were all located in a harsh ocean marine sediment environment without topsoil; a mixture of sandstone and fossilized oyster shells with west winds and angled sunshine. Their oldest vines look like infants. Instead of the gnarled trunks and robust canes one expects from vines over two decades old, theirs are spindly and frail. The fruit is diminutive as well. The tiny clusters of thick-skinned berries are less than half the usual size.
These qualities cause them to worry. They demand that they offer their vines the most exacting attention and care.
In return, the vines offer them a glimpse into what they can’t see and feel, those aspects of the site that the vines allude to as they strive to find balance, that make it a remarkable place: and wines that are unique and instantly identifiable. Learn More.
They offer Pinot noir and chardonnay.
