About the Flâneur

A flâneur is, quite simply, a leisurely wanderer, a worldly explorer, a connoisseur of life. The word, hailing from 19th-century France, captures the idea that the mind functions best at a slow pace, and that curiosity can uncover a life of significance. It is, a life of juxtaposition: alone yet surrounded by bustle, slow yet continuously moving forward.

For the perfect flâneur, for the passionate spectator, it is an immense joy to set up house in the heart of the multitude, amid the ebb and flow of movement, in the midst of the fugitive and the infinite. To be away from home and yet to feel oneself everywhere at home.

As Charles Baudelaire wrote so eloquently, in “The Painter of Modern Life".

They consider themselves to be flâneurs at their core, passionate artisans joined together, by the desire to slow down, observe the world, and create delicious wines.

At Flaneur Wines, they live by the idea that some of the best things in life are uncovered without intention, and that life—like a good wine—should be enjoyed and appreciated.

The best things in life aren’t created in an instant—they take time. That’s how they built their winery, and how they make their wines.

Coming to Oregon from every corner of the country, they are all united by the idea, that wine making doesn’t need frills. It needs hard-working people, who understand the nuances of the vines, and the complexity of a single grape. It needs exquisite attention to detail, and an appreciation for the terr wahr.

But most of all, it needs a group of people, who share a deep appreciation of nature, and the beauty it brings to both wine and life.

When you come to Flaneur Wines, they greet you as guests in their home. They welcome you to the life of the flâneur, and invite you to indulge in the simple joys of good friends, good scenery, and good wine.

Their Flaneurie vineyard, in the Ribbon Ridge A V A, faces due east. These vines are nourished by morning sun, but also shielded from afternoon rays. The sedimentary Willakenzie soil, and glacial erratic stones that hail from Montana, are the fortunate result of the Missoula Floods, over 15,000 years ago. Sitting at 250 to 350 feet., the warmer microclimate paired with this soil creates a spicy dark red fruit character for savory wines that are bold.

Their La Belle Promenade Vineyard, in the Chehalem Mountains A V A, is an exposed hilltop at a rocky 820 feet elevation, and has a cooler microclimate that suits their pinot noir, chardonnay, pinot meunier, aligote, and gruner veltliner grapes, across a diverse 36 acres of volcanic Jory soils emanating from the Columbia River Basalt Flood.

Let me know if you want to learn more about the Missoula Floods or the Columbia River Basalt Floods.

Or more about the Ribbon Ridge A V A, or Chehalem Mountains A V A.

They offer sparkling, white, and red wines.
