As we approach the winery, we thought you might be interested in learning a little about the towns we are passing through.
We are now approaching the town of Lafayette.
This intro is titled:
An ax murder,
a hanging,
and a "curse" in Lafayette.
Between eighteen fifty one, and 1905, Lafayette became famous for the Necktie Parties. (Also known as, Hangings)
Once the county seat and known as the, Athens of Oregon, one necktie party in particular seems the cause for this once thriving city, to begin to fall.
Here's the story.
Anna Marple, a gypsy, and the mother of Richard Marple, who was hanged here for the brutal murder of David Corker cursed the city with 3 fires, and Pox, for all inhabitants during the hanging.
Anna Marple struck fear into the hearts of all who watched this hanging and the curse she spat out.
No one would be able to forget the events of that day.
Anna moved from town, but her curse remained.
Lafayette would suffer and the curse would take hold.
Lafayette's river dried up. Smallpox came killing an unknown number of residents. And Lafayette burned in 1904 and 1934 destroying the town.
All in all, a massive exodus, and fall from power, have left Lafayette struggling to survive.
It is widely believed that Anna Marple has returned to witness her curse and lives in the cemetery where her son's unmarked grave lies.
I'll point out this cemetery, as we drive by it.
If anyone wants to hear The Curse of Lafayette, please let me know. It's 15 minutes long. Again, if you want to hear a podcast, about the curse of Lafayette, please let me know.
