Medici Vineyards
Peter Rosback of Sineanne is the winemaker for Medici Vineyards (Darkhorse Winebar, 1505 Portland Road, Newberg, OR). Medici winery is located high up the Chehelem Range. Their vineyards were planted by Hal Medici in 1976, making it one of the oldest vineyards in the Willamette Valley. Hal Medici is indeed related to the famous Medici Familia of Firenza (Florence, Italy). Their steep sloped, jory soil, estate vineyards rise 550-700 ft. above the valley floor. The advantage of the high elevation, says Hal, is great fruit development. Every effort is made to get 10 days of ripening; harvested sugar levels of 23.5 - 24.5 degrees brix. This is when Pinot Noir fruit development shows its best. Hal and Dorothy Medici do not do tastings at their winery, but love to encourage visitors to hike up from the winery site, and pick the lavender, when it blooms in August and September.
