Rex Hill
Established in 1982, Paul Hart and his wife Jan Jacobsen came along in 1982 and fell in love with the poor building (a former fruit & nut drying plant, pig farm and commune) – but they fell even harder for the hillside on which it sat. It was perfect, they knew, for a new kind of Willamette Valley farm: the vineyard. They cleared out the barn, invited their friends to celebrate, and planted Pinot Noir. Over the next two decades, they added on a little here and a little there and the winery grew along with the vines.
Rex Hill has consistently produced and been honored for top-quality Pinots. Their focus is Pinot Noir with smaller productions of Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and one row of Muscat left for the sweet delight of harvest visitors.
Rex Hill is unique in that the Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris are all barrel fermented or barrel aged in French oak barrels and historic tunnels. You can see the original tunnels into which the carts of drying racks were rolled, but you’ll also see the new tools of the trade: French oak and stainless steel barrels, wine presses, in-house laboratory and bottling line, temperature controlled fermentation and blending tanks, a state of the art cross-flow filter.
The winery is located in a former fruit and nut-drying plant built in the 1920s. Much of the original structure was carefully preserved, and renovated portions of it can be seen in their Tasting Room.
In 2007, A to Z Wineworks (a family-owned Oregon winery) purchased REX HILL bringing fresh enthusiasm and energy strengthening both brands. A commitment to excellence with great integrity and honesty, they craft the finest wines they can; aiming to truly represent their origins and varietal character. In order to accomplish this philosophy and goal, they practice Bio-dynamic farming and sustainable business practices in their estate vineyards. Please let me know if you have questions about bio-dynamic winemaking.
The two families also brought wine education to REX HILL which now offers classes and seminars to professionals and the public.
They offer a $15 PP tasting (refunded with 2 bottle purchase) from a selection of hand-picked, hand-sorted small production Pinot Noirs and Chardonnay.
